This one is a bit of a trek but worth it. On Friday or Saturday evening, drive down to Bristol and stay in Hotel du Vin, which is comfortable and hip, and if you make sure you arrive in time for dinner, you can also enjoy having something to eat in their gorgeous restaurant.

             

Early the next morning, continue west into Wales until you get to Abergavenny, an hour from Bristol and on the edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. When there, nip into the tourist information centre and buy a slick little brochure of the area. Then take a walk up "Sugar Loaf". It's a long way from Rio, but it's still a lovely walk with some good views and is easily "do-able" in a couple of hours.

On the way back, stop at Sugar Loaf Vinyards to try some Welsh wine (it's actually pretty good) and buy some Welsh cheese.

If you want to stay the whole weekend or you don't mind driving back late then the Sugar Loaf walk could be replaced by going further into the park and walking up Pen y Fan, the highest mountain in South Wales. However, it is much more weather-dependent and the Sugar Loaf option gives you a night in a nice City hotel, a taste of South Wales and a lovely walk without too much driving - and in just one day (and night!).

A perfect weekend escape.
