Much as we love London, there are times when even the most devoted of us would agree that getting out of town can be a good thing. An escape to the country, a weekend of relaxation, a chance to really spoil yourselves… Charlton House offers all three!
Perhaps less well known than its Somerset neighbour, the glorious but frighteningly expensive Babington House, Charlton House is a breath of hotel fresh air. An attractive Georgian manor house, it sits on the edge of the town of Shepton Mallet, with easy access from the A303 and a mere 2 and a half hour drive from London.
As you walk through the rather grand pillared entrance, you'll pass a collection of wellie boots, old riding boots and beautiful but worn floor rugs, making you feel rather like you are strolling into someone's house… albeit someone rather smart!
This atmosphere of a 'home from home' is central to the charm of Charlton House. From the gorgeous and comfortable sunny lounge rooms to the incredibly friendly and attentive staff, this is a hotel which combines chic luxury with an incredibly relaxed atmosphere, and the result is sensational. The rooms are beautiful and come at a range of prices. We stayed in a delux room, which, for not much more than the price of a standard double, gave us sky high ceilings, our own little terrace and an incredibly cool mezzanine bathroom with roll top bath and glorious rain shower. Not bad for under £200 a night.
The gorgeous grounds are scattered with outdoor sofa beds from where you can soak up the sun, relax, read your complimentary newspaper or perhaps take afternoon tea! (with trays pilled high with scones, cakes, biscuits and sandwiches, this is a must). If you fancy stretching your legs further afield there are numerous public footpaths on the doorstep, including the lovely East Mendip Way (this 19 mile walk from Wells to Frome passes right through Shepton Mallet), as well as many pretty Somerset villages and towns to explore on your doorstep.
As a final treat there's also a seriously good Elemis Spa here with a highly 'gadgeted' hydrotherapy pool, a swanky outdoor hot tub (champagne bubbles + hot tub bubbles = afternoon well spent…) as well as sauna, steam, laconium, crazy 'experience showers' (including cold mist and tropical rain) plus any number of wonderful treatments.
Charlton House… we'll be back…!

![]() | Mulberry Yes indeed Mary, and although Charlton House is now owned by Dragon Duncan Bannatyne, it was until very recently owned by the Mulberry founders themselves (who are responsible for its glorious refurbishment into a kind of Mulberry country house showroom!).
