Hakkasan is one of only two Michelin-starred Chinese restaurants in the capital so definitely worth a visit. This is a great restaurant for a special occasion; it's really quite an experience and if you haven’t been you must try it. It’s expensive however, so you have to choose wisely if you don’t want to bankrupt yourself - and yes, we're talking about your choice of companion and not just the menu! The décor is fab, the food is amazing and the service is excellent (complete with red-jacketed sommelier if you can tear yourself away from the extensive cocktail list). It’s one of those restaurants that just wows you from the moment you walk in and we think it's just perfect for a special occasion date.
A cheaper, but no less delicious alternative, is Shanghai Blues in Holborn – ask to sit in the room on your left as you go in, where the bar and mezzanine levels are. Enjoy the elegant and intimate atmosphere and make sure you order the jasmin tea ice cream - it's legendary!
Afterwards, rather than retiring to the bar, we suggest a complete change of scenery by trotting down to a little street off Kingsway where you will enter a twilightzone. Your destination is the Negracha Tango Club, reminiscent of a school hall or an old fashioned dance hall. No worries if you can’t dance the tango, as you can pay just to watch rather than participate. You can then ensconce yourself in a corner and watch the pros and then the regular guests dancing away to awesome music. You’ll think you're in Buenos Aires! If you’re feeling up for it, then impress your date with your fancy footwork. It’s open very late, there’s a bar and it's perhaps the perfect antidote to a flash meal!
