Eltham Palace

Miss Mary says…
This really is a fascinating place, which mixes 1930’s ocean-liner style with medieval technology.

Date Description

early days South
Be warned... your date may think they are going on the worst date ever as you head off through Tulse Hill but once you get to Eltham, an Art Deco mansion in a medieval setting, you’ll be let off!

The palace, an amazing combination of innovation and the tradition, has a royal history dating back 800 years. So there will be plenty to talk about! Once you have had your fill of culture, you can relax in the gardens with a picnic and just chill out. In the summer the palace plays host to open air theatre so it is worth keeping an eye on their website to see what is currently on offer...

Eltham has been used as a location for a number of films (Bright Young Things, I Capture the Castle, High Heels and Low Lifes and The Gathering Storm to name a few) so, if you are somewhere pretty high up on the smooth scale you might want to rent a copy of one of these for a follow up date.

national maritime museum

At only two miles from Greenwich there is plenty of scope to carry on if the date is going well... Wander through Greenwich seeing the Cutty Sark, the National Maritime Museum and the Royal Observatory Greenwich – the home of Greenwich Mean Time. If you've gone crazy and splashed out on an English Heritage membership card then why not visit another English Heritage property, Ranger’s House, an elegant villa on the edge of Greenwich Park? This is the new home of the Wernher Collection, a unique and eclectic collection of more than 650 works of art.

At the end of your day, sample the delights of Greenwich’s many restaurants and traditional English pubs before returning to central London by train (from Greenwich Station) or by boat (from Greenwich Pier) along the Thames, sailing past the Tower of London, to central London.

In the words of Lou Reed, such a perfect day!

Great
Had a really good date here. Couldn't believe how easy it was to get to from Stockwell... Also followed your idea of going to Greenwich for the rest of the date, which was so fantastic. Def one for a sunny day though!

Loved it!
I couldn't believe you could find somewhere like this so close to London - brilliant! Drove from Clapham and had a picnic there. We only went for a few hours but it felt like a whole day away from London which gives it a big thumbs up!
