There may be those amongst you who will be surprised to see a hotel restaurant listed here as a great date. If the truth be told, we too have had our qualms about recommending them in the past - they can sometimes be large and impersonal, perhaps a little too much ‘white tablecloth’ and not quite enough 'quirk'. So it came as rather a pleasant surprise to discover Gilt and The Rib Room in the Jumeriah Hotel, Belgravia...

There’s something about being greeted at the door of a hotel by a uniformed and widely smiling member of staff that makes you feel instantly grander isn’t there? In fact as the door of your taxi is opened for you and you step gracefully out and through the revolving doors, you are for the night the VIP you’ve always known you could be! It’s a theme that you’ll find continues throughout the hotel, where your needs seem to be an absolute priority, and that’s really what makes this place so special.

            

Tucked away discretely to the right of the main foyer is Gilt, the glitzy yet intimate champagne bar, where we suggest you arrange to meet your date. It’s fairly smart, so you’ll want to dress for the occasion - you can’t very well sip glittering champagne cocktails in torn jeans now, can you? With its snug proportions, housing only a scattering of small tables, and its luxurious and glittering decor, this wonderful spot is worlds away from the standard hotel bar, and what’s more, it’s open until three in the morning! Definitely one to know about...

Once you're suitably relaxed post-cocktail, make your way back across the ground floor where you'll find the newly re-designed (Martin Brudnizki no less) Rib Room. With an inspired mix of old and new, it has managed to retain the atmosphere of a well established regular's haunt whilst at the same time feeling contempory and exciting. It's smart yet easy going, with perfectly laid white tables but relaxed and comfortable seating (top tip - we reckon the best tables are those raised up in front of the bar area, with lovely old fashioned-style green leather sofas). There's a warm and friendly atmosphere, in part due to the presence of some serious regulars, but largely because here regulars, celebrities (and there do seem to be rather a few of these) and newcomers are all treated like old friends.

              

The food is excellent, with a fabulous range of the very best of British food - although you'll have guessed by the name that it's not necessarily the best place to take your vegetarian date! It's not cheap, but the quality is exceptional and, as with everything else, it's delivered with absolutely impecable service. 

If you've got any space left after dinner, 'sit soft' with a drink at the bar and revel in that wonderful holiday feeling that's part and parcel of this excellent, if a little too short, hotel break.
