In the depths of a recession I think this one makes a great informal night out with delicious comfort food, but make sure that your date knows to expect something that's traditional rather than chic!
Buy a nice bottle of wine at the branch of Nicolas on Marylebone High Street and head round the corner to the Golden Hind fish and chip restaurant. This place is famous amongst those in the fish and chip fraternity as one of the oldest and best in London. Be warned that you may have to queue up outside, but it's worth it when you sit down to eat. The decor is nothing special but the food is. Go for the haddock and chips with the obligatory mushy peas too! If you are really hungry, the deep-fried feta cheese as a starter comes highly recommended.
After supper, continue down Marylebone Lane to the Golden Eagle pub. This old-school London boozer has a good feel to it and plenty of real beers on tap. Don't expect a fashionable look and chi-chi people, but it has a great atmosphere. The best days to go are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays when Tony 'Fingers' Pearson plays traditional tunes on the old piano and everyone joins in the singing. In the days of pubs and wine bars that all look this same, this place is a great throwback.
