Date Description

early days West, Central

Officially one of the coolest date destinations I have ever been too. Hidden behind Oxford Circus, on a quiet road going into Marylebone runs a set of stairs into a mystical cellar. There you will find a drinks menu like no other. And it’s called Purl. You definitely can’t walk in and ask for a Vodka and Orange. You might even be thrown out using nitrogenous smoke (yes that is actually used in the drinks making) but I guess it would be a good thing if the conversation wasn't flowing as nicely as the drinks?!

Purl

1950s/ Edwardian style. A globe filled with bottles of flavours, alcohol and magic. Cocktails served in buckets, in silver and in paper bags… Each drink is unique and beautiful. They've taken a dingy dungeon and turned it into an cocktail experience like no other. The alcohol is perfection, the knowledge is terrifying and a mixology vibe means you are paying for the ultimate drink that will take you for a ride. And when I chose the Green Fairy, boy did I go on one. Absinthe bubbling and foaming away on the bar is poured into a tiny gullet which rests in a dish. You can’t put it out and at times you definitely need too.

You are given menus that look like they were found on a pirate ship. You are even given sandwiches as a hint to line your stomach. The alcohol is pure. It’s punchy and the fruit, smoke and bubbles are something to see. It’s sister place called the Whistling Shop serves whole pigs on Sundays for a Victorian fatty day. There are just so many things to talk about and so little time. Just go. Prepare yourself for something more than a trip to Tiger Tiger. Oh and it’s right by James Street. So grab an Italian before… or after if you’re feeling particularly Mediterranean. I would be in love by the end of this date...
