So, we're going to put it out there straight away… Sands End is a strange part of London! The residential streets are quiet and low, and being so close to the river it has a sort of abandoned docks feel to it. This strange atmosphere means that the fantastic Sands End Pub is like a welcome oasis in the desert: it's charming, characterful and friendly and we bet you'll want to return.
The GDG reviewed the pub in November when it's rustic interior was perfect for a cold night, but it would be equally enjoyable in the Summer - a relaxed retreat from the sticky streets!
Even if you are going for dinner we would recommend a drink at the bar first, and if you've got enough of an appetite, one of their famous scotch eggs. The reputation of the scotch egg was why we decided to visit the Sands End and it didn't disappoint. Standing up a the bar with a pint, a scotch egg and a local by his side was Other Half's idea of heaven - he would've been happy if we'd gone home at this point!
But we didn't… we headed round to the back of the pub for dinner. This area is seriously romantic, with candle lit tables and an intimate feel. When you book ask for the small table for two in the corner (table no.10) which is definitely the most romantic.
The food is excellent - seasonal British (not brilliant for vegetarians) and with some great old fashioned "school puddings". Other Half had a plate of oysters followed by partridge whilst I opted for pear and goat's cheese salad followed by gnocchi. The service was friendly and relaxed and when you add this to the atmosphere and the food you've got the perfect venue for an early days date. No pressure, just good food and good conversation.
If you want to carry on your date afterwards then we would suggest the brilliant 606 Jazz Club which is only 5 mins walk away…
