The V&A

Miss Mary says…
In a survey carried out in 2006, 20% of respondents said they had fallen in love in a museum, with the V & A topping the list of most romantic destinations.

Date Description

early daysfirst date West, Central

Yes, it's true, and what's more 65% said that a museum or gallery would be their first choice for a great date location. So now IS the time to become just another statistic! With late openings on the last Friday of each month and live jazz in the galleries, maybe love will blossom amidst the Decorative and Applied Arts collections?

If you are getting to the V&A by tube then we suggest you meet your date for a cup of coffee and a crepe at the Kensington Creperie before heading on up the road to the museum. Alternatively, get your first 'snog' out of the way by heading to Snog Pure Frozen Yoghurt on Thurloe Place - who knows how a date that starts with a 'snog' might end...

Once you arrive at the V&A you'll discover just how much there is to see and do - in fact we challenge any of you to fail to have a great date here! If you haven't been to the V&A before, there really is no easy way to summarise a collection which ranges from the world's most important and historic Persian carpets to the best of 21st-century fashion, except to say that it's an enormous, eclectic and eccentric treasure trove of works by some of the worlds best designers, craftsmen and sculptors - what a mouthful!

Highlights include the national collection of paintings by Constable, the Three Graces by Conova, the dazzling dress collection and much much more.

If all this culture is making you hungry then we suggest you break for a snack in the V&A Cafe. The cafe is located in the original refreshment rooms, the Morris, Gamble and Poynter Rooms. These three rooms formed the first museum restaurant in the world and were intended as a showpiece of modern design, craftsmanship and manufacturing. So even when you are taking a break you are still learning!

In the Summer the Courtyard Garden is open and serves light refreshments - the perfect place to relax and soak up the sun.

Having left the V&A there are lots of options to continue your date. You could head up to Hyde Park and just chill out (that would be my preference after a full day at a museum!) or you could swing by Harrods for a spot of window shopping - or actual shopping depending on the budget/seriousness of the date!

NB: If you really want to give the statistics a chance, there are plenty of other great museums in the area for you to visit and fall in love in… just remember some sensible walking shoes to ward off those 'museum legs'!
