Film Romantique

With one of our favourite dates to Somerset House open air cinema now behind us for 2009 we wanted to remind you that there are loads of other great film dates in London. With the Portobello Film Festival starting today there's no better time...
As it was the inspiration for this feature it's the best place to start! Now in it's 14th year, iit was created to give exposure to new filmakers and movies in different formats. As a result of not charging for the screenings (thats right people this is a free date!) the films are screened in unusual locations all around the Portobello Road area. As well as a full programme of films there is also the Video Cafe which offers films that dont fit into the other catergories to be shown, but also for last minute entries and suggestions from anyone - so you have the chance to take the date and your romancing skills to the next level and submit a film of your own! For a full line up of what's on until the 20th September then go to their website.

We've mentioned it before but for a seriously classy cinema adventure to impress your date with in London - the Everyman cinemas are great. Screen on the Green is on Upper Street, opposite Islington Green not far from Angel tube station. This is a proper cinema as far as seating goes but there's still a chance to cosy up with a bottle of wine and let a romantic movie do your work for you! On the whole they show mainstream new releases but there's always something different at one of the Everyman cinemas to suit all tastes, wether it be The Green, Hampstead, Belsize Park, Baker Street or one of their screens out of London - so something to melt the heart of any date!
Open all year this bar on Borough High Street, not far from Borough Station, has a cinema screen where they show screenings of both recent releases as well as more eclectic films. On the whole they only have films showing on Sunday-Wednesday but with the ocasional comedy night and a TV and Film quiz there is lots going on here. Watch out though - this is football season and they show that too so if you think your date isn't going to be keen then stay away from here on the nights they show the big matches! For a full line up check out their listings page.
This Balham bar and restaurant with a 24 seat cinema is another credit crunch date option at £15.50 for two courses and a movie (i'd keep the value of the evening quite if I were you!). They tend to screen mainstream movies and the best thing about it is you sit on two seater sofas, ideal for snuggling up... They also have comedy nights on Sundays for something else to do. They give listings out around a month in advance so for this months movies go to their events page.
We couldn't forget this stalwart of London cinema of course - showing such a varied and full programme of films and movies we wouldn't begin to list them here so make sure you have a good look at their website for listings. It's on the southbank just near Waterloo bridge so you've got any number of options for restaurants and bars to go to around a trip to the BFI, not least a visit to their own. If you fancy something a bit more comercial there is always the IMAX with its vast screen making for quite a show not to mention the new addition of LOVE SEATS!

BFI bar I went to the bar at the BFI the other night... didn't watch a movie but the bar was very cool - right on the river and in the middle of the arty South Bank. A good place to start or end a date. |
