War Horse

So we may have been slightly slow on the uptake of this one, but GDG have FINALLY been to see the much talked about War Horse and we're pleased to report that it really does live up to all the hype. There's simply no other way of describing it, it's incredible.
Arriving at the not particularly glamorous New London Theatre on Drury Lane, it's fair to say that we had mixed feelings about what was in store. The risk of seeing a performance that everyone says is brilliant, is that you will inevitably be disappointed, and with the knowledge that the main event was going to be an arty version of the pantomime horse, we weren't without our concerns.
We needn't have worried. The work that must have gone in to perfecting this production beggars belief. It truly is a masterpiece. Those horses! An engineering and artistic wonder, they will have you transfixed from the moment that Joey the foal enters the scene. Each ear movement, each shake of the head or stamp of the foot is so incredibly true to life it is startling. How you can transform a glorified cane skeleton, housing multiple cast members, into a creature with both character and grace is beyond us, but they do. What's more, the horses are so believable that you are able to move beyond your initial awe and engross yourself fully in the both comical and moving narrative without distraction. There were tears all round in camp GDG!
The production is now an established feature at the New London Theatre, set to run until at least October 2011, so you've plenty of time to make the trip. Tickets vary from £15 - £80, with concessions for under 18's, senior citizens and a 'standby' price for under 25's (that's more like it!). magnificent I was really overwhelmed by the brilliance of War Horse and can't recommend it highly enough. I was also seriously impressed by my boyfriend for organising it! |
